AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University seniors Vlad Cobzaru and Lara Way were officially accepted into the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University on Friday, Dec. 1.
There were 708 who applied and only 96 were accepted this year. Cobzaru (Iasi, Romania), a 6-8 senior forward on the men's basketball team, and Way (Martinez, Ga.), a senior on the cross country and track and field teams, are the first student-athletes from Augusta University to finish their athletic eligibility and be accepted into dental school.
Cobzaru has been with the Jaguars since his freshman season in 2014-15. Last season in 2016-17, Cobzaru received the Peach Belt Conference's Elite-15 Award for having the highest GPA of all men's basketball players at the PBC Tournament. He has eight career double-doubles and has been named PBC All-Academic during his tenure.
"I'm just getting ready for the next step honestly," Cobzaru said. It's been a brief moment of catching my breathe and I am grasping it and realizing that this is happening. Now I have to wrap up this semester and next semester and I'm ready for it."
Way helped guide the Augusta women's cross country team to a No. 6 NCAA Southeast Region ranking. She has been named first team Peach Belt All-Conference in back-to-back seasons and was named NCAA All-Region following the recent 2017 season. Also a PBC All-Academic selection, Way guided the Jaguars as they finished first or second in every regular-season race and grabbed runner-up at the PBC Championships.
"You spend so many years in school and it seems like the end is so far away and it's hard to see," Way said. "It comes down to this moment right here. I dreamed of this when I was a kid and I am extremely excited to get into dental school, all my dreams came true today."
