Pirates Best ASU, 7-4

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Armstrong Atlantic State's Jonathan Fulghum hurled four innings of shutout relief Tuesday afternoon as the Pirates notched a 7-4 non-conference victory over Augusta State at Pirate Field.

The loss dropped the Jaguars, in their first season under head coach Chris Cooper, to 15-28 overall. The victory earned the Pirates (25-18) a sweep of the home-and-home series with the Jaguars. AASU won the earlier matchup in Augusta, 3-2, on February 23.

Senior second baseman Tony Baker went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to pace the Jags. Freshman leftfielder Phillip Anchors was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and freshman catcher Justin Appel turned in a 2-for-4 day with a run scored.

ASU got on the board first on an RBI-single by Anchors in the top of the second inning, but the Pirates answered with two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI-double from Carlos Cardoza-Oquendo and a fielder's choice RBI by Zittrouer.

The Jags pulled even in the top of the third on an RBI-single from Carl Burrow, but the Pirates took the lead for good in the fourth with a pair of runs.

Fulghum (4-2) took over in the fourth for starter Ryan Smith and limited ASU to just two hits in four innings, walking one and striking out two to pick up the victory. Brandon McCreery hurled the final two innings, giving up two hits and one earned run, striking out two to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Starter Scott Shipman (2-1) took the loss for ASU, going 4,2 innings and giving up seven hits and five runs - four earned - while walking six and striking out one.

Zittrouer's three hits led the Pirates at the plate, while Wyche reached in all five of his plate appearances and collected his PBC-leading 41st stolen base of the year.

The Jags travel to Greenwood, S.C., on Thursday, April 22 and face Lander in a 7:00 p.m., non-conference contest.
