GC Offense Too Much For ASU

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State jumped ahead early, but Georgia College's offense proved too much as the Bobcats swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday at Jaguar Field.

In the first game, ASU put five across in the second to take an early lead. Matt Smith hit a one-out single, and moved to third on Ross Miles' double. Bryson Stack brought both runners home with a two-RBI single to make it 2-0. Caleb Saggus reached on an error. Finally, Seth Foster bashed a two-out, three-run home run – his first of the year – to make it a 5-0 Jaguar advantage.

Georgia College responded with two in the third with two RBI doubles, but Augusta State answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Zach Murray worked the count for a one-out walk, and Smith's singled moved Murray to second. Miles walked, loading the bases. Stack hit into a fielder's choice that brought Murray home to make it 6-2, and a wild pitch scored Smith for the five-run lead.

The offense couldn't keep things going, however, and the Bobcats chipped away at the lead with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull within one. Finally, a four-run sixth inning gave GC the lead, and they tacked on six more for the 16-7 opening-game win.

John Clark earned the win in relief for the Bobcats, throwing 4 1/3 innings of one-hit ball for his first win of the season. Wilson Taylor (3-2) took the loss for the Jaguars.

In the nightcap, GC got two in the first, one in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth before holding on for a 7-5 win.

Down 7-3 heading into the ninth, the Jaguars put together a two-out rally. Bradley Dennis beat out an infield single to short, and moved to second on Matt Smith's walk. Justin Appel knocked a double to deep left center that brought both runners home to pull ASU within two, but Bobcat hurler Zack Hula got a popout to end the game.

Mike Guinane threw seven innings, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs to improve to 2-6 on the season. He struck out six while walking two. Hula threw two innings for his fifth save on the year. Chase Johnston (3-2) took the loss for the Jaguars.

Matt Smith and Caleb Saggus paced the Jaguars with three hits each on the day. Patrick Daugherty led the Bobcats with a 6-for-9 day.

Six seniors were honored between games: Caleb Saggus, Chase Johnston, Wilson Taylor, Rob Crosby, Kyle Golden, and Robbie Downing.

The same two teams play Sunday, April 15 with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. at Jaguar Field for the conclusion of the three-game set.
