AIKEN, S.C. – The Jaguars lost at rival USC Aiken 7-1 Friday night in a Peach Belt Conference single game in Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
The Pacers (28-8) broke open a scoreless game in the third inning when they scored five off ASU (10-26) starter Kip Custer. Branden Millhouse led off with a single and scored on Sean Miller's double. A sac fly scored another and three walks led to an ASU infield error that scored one more. A hit-by-pitch and one more sac fly gave USCA a 5-0 lead.
Custer (5-5) pitched 6.0 innings, surrendering seven hits for six runs (five earned) and dealing five strikeouts and five walks. Trey McAvoy relieved in 1.2 innings, giving up two hits for two runs before Tyler Ross relieved in 0.1 innings. Jeff Rice got the Jags going with a solo homerun to left field in the sixth to make it a 5-1 game, but USCA starter Derek Beasley (9-0) kept the Jags in check, allowing only one run on two hits and dealing 10 strikeouts.
The Pacers added two more in the eighth for a 7-1 final, outhitting the Jags 8-to-3. Grayson Smith went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Pacers and Miller was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. ASU's JD Sabo went 1-for-4 and Jeff Rice was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI off his solo homer.
The Jags continue the weekend series against the Pacers tomorrow, Saturday April 6 for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
