Mortimer, Wachman Join Jags

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguar Baseball Program boosted its coaching staff in the offseason with the hiring of Mark Mortimer as the new assistant coach and Robbie Wachman as the new pitching coach for the 2014 baseball campaign.

He signed with the Atlanta Braves in 1997, coached in Major League Baseball from 2002-03, and now Mortimer is joining the GRU Augusta Baseball Program as the top assistant to Head Coach Jason Eller.

Mortimer will oversee hitters and catchers and assist with the infielders. Making it all the way to triple-A baseball with the Braves organization as a primary catcher with experience at first base and outfield, Mark was part of back-to-back Carolina League Championships with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. In 2002 he stayed in the MLB as the Braves' bullpen catcher and batting-practice pitcher. Mortimer caught for Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and John Smoltz during his year traveling and practicing with the team.

From 2010-12, Mark was hitting and catching coach for Parkview High School's baseball and softball teams. He saw the Parkview baseball team win back-to-back state championships in 2011 and 2012 and a national title in 2012.  He was an instructor for professional players and a competitive travel-baseball coach with Hardball Warehouse in Duluth, Ga., in 2004. In 2005 Mark began working with BigStix Baseball as the president of the high school baseball program. Since then he has watched 60 players sign college scholarships and coached 10 players that are currently playing in the big leagues.

Mortimer earned his B.S. in criminal justice from Georgia Gwinnett College in 2013. Working towards his degree at Georgia State University from 1995-97, Mark played baseball for two years with the Panthers before being drafted. He was a Mizuno Freshman All-American and a three-time, first-team All-Conference and All-Region selection at GSU and was the Trans America Athletics Association hitting champion in 1996.

Robbie Wachman will oversee all things pitching for the baseball program. After pitching for Middle Georgia College, where he gained his associates degree, College of Charleston, and Valdosta State, Wachman signed to play professional baseball. In 2002 he was drafted by the Texas Rangers and in 2004 by the Cincinnati Reds. Wachman pitched for three and a half years in the Reds' organization before heading to Augusta.

He opened Best 9 Sports Academy - a community-based organization serving the CSRA. Comprised of proven professional players, as well as professional scouts, Best 9 Sports' goal was to teach the fundamentals of the game through physical instruction, training, and utilizing personal connections to scouts and others in the baseball business, both at the collegiate and professional level. During his tenure as owner of Best 9 Sports, Wachman saw over 100 student-athletes sign collegiate scholarships.

Husband to Bille Ann Wachman and father to William Pierce (one) and Mattison Reese (six), Robbie lives in Augusta, Ga., and plans to further his education at Georgia Regents University.
