ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Augusta University baseball team traveled to Claflin University for a non-conference single game on Tuesday night and won 12-5 at Historic Mirmow Field. The victory for Augusta (10-11) over Claflin (6-14) was the second-largest winning margin on the season.
The Jaguars are now 6-4 in their last 10 games and the win snapped the Panther's three-game winning streak.
Freshman Jake Wotell (1-0) made his first collegiate start and pitched 5.1 innings with two strikeouts. It was his second appearance of the season and he held the Panthers to one run on five hits.
Senior Cole Janousek now has an 11 game hitting streak as he went 3-4 with a run and RBI. Janousek now has six games with three hits. Freshman Jose Nogueras posted three RBI and scored twice while knocking a triple and junior Wagner had two RBI on a lone hit.
The offense came alive early as the Jags powered past the Panthers with 7-1 after four innings. Claflin got one run back in the fifth, but AU loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning. They scored two on consecutive wild pitches and blew it open to win 12-5.
Johnathan Parnell went 3-5 with Claflin and Michael Kendrick was 2-3 with two scored runs. Jamal Devine (1-1) got the loss for the Panthers on the mound.
The Jags travel to Dahlonega, Ga., for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with the North Georgia Nighthawks March 17-19. Augusta plays Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
