AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with the UNC Pembroke Braves on Saturday afternoon and lost 9-8 in 10 innings before dominating the second meeting 11-5 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Jaguars (9-11, 4-5 PBC) took game one of the series against UNCP (16-7, 2-4 PBC) on Friday night and split the double feature with each team matching a combined 23 hits on Saturday.
Jaguar seniors Cody Lanford and Jamal Cummings shined in game one with Lanford going 2-3 with three RBI and two runs and Cummings 3-4 with three runs. Junior Jim Wagner was 2-3 and scored twice for the Jags in the first outing.
In game one, senior Matthew Kuhlenberg made his third start for AU and went six innings to allow three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Juniors Casey Lenoch, Jordan Kelly, and David Hagelston pitched in relief for the Jags. Hagelston (0-4) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two hits for one run in the loss.
The Braves brought around one run in the first and second inning, but the Jags rallied to knot the game at 2-2 on Janousek's RBI single up the middle in the third.
UNCP took a 7-2 lead after the top of the seventh, but the Jags weren't done. Lanford laced a bases-loaded triple over the centerfielder's head in the bottom of the inning to score three, before Roberts roped one to left to score Lanford for a one-run game.
AU scored two in the ninth inning to tie the game, with Roberts' sacrifice fly knotting it at 8-8. The Braves carded one in the 10th and held on for a 9-8 final. Matt Fuhr started for UNCP, but Kyle Ramsey (2-1) came in late to get the win in the 10th inning.
Roberto Rivera and Alex Simpson each had three hits in the first game for the Braves.
The Braves scored one in the first inning of game one, but four runs in the Jags' first at bat made it 4-1. Augusta scored six in a huge third inning and went on to win 11-5.
Senior Will Thompson (2-0) tossed five innings for AU in game two and struck out three while giving up five hits for two runs.
Drew Beeaver went 2-3 in game two for the Braves, while Kyle Boraski (0-2) grabbed the loss.
AU plays at Claflin on Tuesday, March 14 for a 6:00 p.m. single game in Orangeburg, S.C.
