AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted the North Greenville Crusaders on Tuesday night and dropped a 9-7 a non-conference game in Lake Olmstead Stadium. Augusta (5-10) had a five-run lead against North Greenville (12-3) spoiled in the top of the eighth inning and fell by two runs.
The Jaguars gave up two runs in the second inning on an infield error, but responded in the bottom half and batted around in lineup. Senior Brent Alford started the offense with a double and junior Patrick Watson and freshman Trent Maddox drew two straight walks. Juniors Devin Bilardello, Bakari Gayle, and Harrison Moore, all reached, before senior Jim Wagner delivered a bases-clearing triple. Alford added another RBI-single later in the inning to give AU a 7-2 lead.
NGU carded one run in the top of the fifth and three in the sixth and eighth to come from behind for the win. The Crusaders have now won six straight and snapped a three-game streak for AU.
Bilardello and Moore had two hits each, while Bilardello added two RBI and a walk. Alford was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run.
Rookie right-hander Charlie Cochran made his first collegiate start for Augusta and tossed five innings to strike out two and allow three runs (one earned). After senior Tony Jones pitched 0.2 innings, freshman reliever Brennen Berger (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings and struck out three, while surrendering four hits for three runs in the loss.
Augusta continues its longest home streak of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 28 when they host the Claflin Panthers in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
