ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Augusta University baseball team ran into the No. 6 nationally-ranked Flagler Saints on Friday night to open a Peach Belt Conference series on the road and were tied 6-6 heading into the second to last inning. Flagler survived Augusta and drew a wild pitch in the eighth inning to score a run and barely get by for the win.
The Jaguars (7-17, 5-11 PBC) put up two runs in their first at bat against PBC-leading Flagler (21-3, 13-0 PBC), but the Saints added one in the bottom of the first, four in the second, and another in the fourth to take the lead. AU tied the game down to the wire, but the Saints shined at home and won.
Bilardello and senior Jim Wagner each had two hits for the Jags, while Gayle and Moore picked up two RBI for Augusta in the loss.
Senior David Hagelston came in to relieve junior Sam Goberdhan in the third inning and he struck out three in four innings pitched. Senior Cody Pugh (0-3) came in to get the loss in two innings of work for AU.
AU's scoring began in the first when Moore scored juniors Zack Goble and Bakari Gayle with a single through the left side and Gayle gave AU two more runs with a two-run homer to score junior Devin Bilardello.
Augusta was down 6-2, but the Jaguars tied the game with a pair in the fifth and sixth. Flagler scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to steal a 7-6 win.
The series between Augusta and Flagler continues with game two on Saturday, March 17 with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
