AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team met the Anderson Trojans for a midweek non-conference game at Jaguar Field on Wednesday afternoon and won 14-4 by recording 23 hits in the slugfest.
Augusta (3-1) senior Devin Bilardello went 5-for-6 at the plater, while sophomore Trent Maddox, Mason Robertson, and freshman Ben Markiewicz all had three hits for Augusta. Maddox hit a home run and freshman Beau Hanna added his fourth long ball of the year.
The Jaguars started their first at bat with a double and triple from Bilardello and senior Harrison Moore to take a 1-0 lead. The Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week, Beau Hanna, drove in the next run for a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Trojans (3-1) tacked on a run in the second inning, but AU plated four in the fourth and two in the fifth - highlighted by Hanna's fourth home run of the season and Maddox's first. Augusta went on to win 14-4 with 23 hits, five hits shy of the Augusta single-game record.
Augusta freshman lefty Tripp Church made the first start of college career and struck out four in three innings pitched, while allowing five hits for a run and zero walks. Freshman John Micah Law (1-0) tossed two innings, before sophomore Charlie Cochran and freshmen Clark Adams and Alex Colon closed out the game in relief.
Peach Belt play begins this weekend for the Jaguars when they host Francis Marion for a three-game series at Jaguar Field Feb. 9-10. The Jags play the Patriots in an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 9 and wrap the series with a single game on Sunday, Feb. 10.
