ASU Sweeps UNC Pembroke

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State Lady Jaguars pulled out a 51-48 victory over UNC Pembroke and the Jaguar men’s squad completed the doubleheader sweep with an 83-49 victory over the Braves Wednesday night in the Peach Belt Conference opener for both schools in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Latoya Renwrick, the only Lady Jaguar to reach double figures, tallied 12 points, five rebounds and four steals. UNCP’s Danielle Richardson posted a double-double with a game-high 15 points and 14 rebounds. Lindsay Bartholf and Tiffany Wright chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

With the victory, the Lady Jags snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in Peach Belt Conference play. The Lady Braves, who entered the game having won seven of their last eight, dropped to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the PBC.

The Lady Jags held UNC Pembroke to just one field goal over the final 5:03 and junior forward Eva Vodrazkova nailed two free throws with 26 seconds left to give ASU a three-point lead. The Lady Braves then missed a pair of layups in the final 10 seconds.

ASU led early on 7-3 before UNCP went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-7 lead with 9:18 to play in the first half. The Lady Jags then rattled off 20 consecutive points over a seven-minute stretch to assume a 27-15 advantage before Richardson scored with 34 seconds left to end a scoreless drought of 9:34. ASU led by as much as 13 in second half with 11:55 remaining before the Lady Braves used a 14-2 run to close within one on a pair of Kristin Vaughn free throws at the 7:48 mark.

The Lady Jags answered with a three-pointer from Andrea McCurry before four straight points from Richardson tied the game at 45-all with 5:03 left. UNCP managed just one field goal the rest of the way, a three-pointer from Wright at the 2:35 mark, that gave the visitors a brief lead at 48-47. Renwrick answered immediately on a runner to regain the lead for ASU and Vodrazkova’s free throws accounted for the final points of the game.

Freshmen Larry Diamond and Cameron Tovey each scored 14 points to pace the ASU men’s squad to an 83-49 win over UNCP. Jason Mills added 12 points and Arthur Thomas chipped in 10 as all 11 players on the Jaguar roster scored in the game.

The Jags (8-4, 1-0) shot 54.3 percent from the field, their second-highest percentage of the season, and outrebounded the Braves 40-20.

Frank Foster led UNCP (2-10, 0-1) with 14 points and Jerrell Hunter posted 11 in the losing effort.

ASU travels to Savannah to take on Armstrong Atlantic State on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, before returning home to host Lander on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
