Jags Knock Off No. 21 Armstrong Atlantic

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Augusta State’s Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Jaguars to their fifth straight win Wednesday night, an 83-74 Peach Belt Conference victory at No. 21 Armstrong Atlantic State in Alumni Arena.

The win lifts ASU to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in PBC play and snapped Armstrong’s 13-game home winning streak. The Jags, the last team to beat AASU in Alumni Arena during the 2005-06 season, also extended their best start since the 1977-78 season.

Freshman point guard Daniel Dixon tallied a career-high 18 points to go along with five assists and four steals. Fellow freshman Ben Madgen had 17 points and sophomore Garret Siler chipped in 12 points. Bowman also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and booked three assists, two blocks and two steals.

Armstrong’s All-American center Bryan Taylor paced the Pirates with a double-double, collecting 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tory Harris managed 15 points, while Jamaal Galloway and Patrick Sanou added 11 and 10 points, respectively. The loss dropped AASU to 12-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

ASU trailed by two at the half before outscoring the Pirates 48-37 in the second half. The Jags shot 59.3 percent in the second half and limited Armstrong to 48 percent from the field after shooting 58 percent in the first half.

The Jags hit nine three-pointers and 20-of-28 free throws, compared to just 8-of-9 at the charity stripe for AASU. The contest featured eight ties and 11 lead changes.

In the women’s matchup, Armstrong battled back from a second-half deficit to clip the Lady Jaguars 73-71.

Senior reserve forward Tiffany Paschal posted a career-high 13 points and 10 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Freshman guard Brittany Jarrard registered 13 points and junior guard Deo Ngulela had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Kaneetha Gordon booked a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Lady Pirates. Nicole Hornage contributed 11 points.

ASU led 34-29 at the half before Armstrong (10-6, 4-1 PBC) exploded in the second half for 44 points. The Lady Jags outshot AASU for the game – 46.2 percent to 38.7 percent – but the Lady Pirates owned the edge at the free-throw line, connecting on 16-of-23 attempts in second half to just 3-of-5 for ASU.

The Lady Jags (9-6, 1-4 PBC) dominated the interior, outscoring AASU 36-14 in the paint. Of the Lady Jags’ 71 points, a season-high 39 came from the bench.

ASU returns to action Saturday when both squads travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to take on North Georgia in a PBC doubleheader. The women’s contest is scheduled to tip off at 2:00 p.m. with the men’s matchup to follow at 4:00 p.m. at Memorial Hall.
