ASU Sweeps UNCP On Homecoming

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State posted its sixth consecutive Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep at home Saturday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

In front of a Homecoming crowd of 2,015 -- the second-largest attendance for a regular-season game in the 17-year history of Christenberry Fieldhouse -- the 10th-ranked ASU men's squad extended its winning streak to 14 games while the Lady Jaguars notched their eighth win in the last nine games.

Freshman reserve Brittany Jarrard tallied a game-high 17 points and three other players cracked double figures as ASU posted its most lopsided conference win of the season with an 81-46 victory. Fellow freshman reserve Nicole Mealing had 12 points while the starting backcourt tandem of senior Alla Batovska and junior Deo Ngulela added 11 each, with Ngulela dishing out nine assists.

The victory lifted the Lady Jags to 17-7 overall and 9-5 in the PBC and kept them within a game of the PBC South Division leader Clayton State.

Natasha Stotler led the Lady Braves (11-14, 8-6 PBC) with 10 points.

ASU shot 58.3 percent for the game, including 62.5 percent in the second half, and limited UNCP to just 30.6 percent shooting. The Lady Jags set a season-high with 11 three-pointers.

In the men's contest, freshman forward Ben Madgen registered a game-high 21 points as the Jaguars shot over 50 percent for the sixth consecutive game in an 80-57 victory over the Braves.

Junior forward AJ Bowman, who didn't start after missing practice time with the flu, managed 12 points. Steve Smith and Garrett Siler posted 11 and 10 points, respectively, and freshman guard Kip Small handed out nine assists.

The Jags used a 15-2 run to break open the contest midway through the first half and fashioned a 10-2 spurt later in the half to open up as much as a 26-point lead. ASU built its lead to 33 on two occasions in the second half, the last on a jumper by Ethso Ilunga with 9:37 remaining.

Melvin Mackey paced the Braves with 11 points off the bench and Jonathan Hart provided 10.

The victory pushed ASU to 22-3 overall and 14-0 in the PBC, while UNCP dropped to 6-19 overall and 5-8 in the league. The win marked the 14th straight home victory for ASU. The Jags matched their season high for first-half points with 49.

ASU travels to Morrow, Ga., to take on a pair of a pair of nationally-ranked Clayton State squads on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Jags close the regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they host Georgia Southwestern for Senior Day at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m.
