No. 10 ASU Bounces Back, 88-81

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- Augusta State benefited from a lineup change and some extra rest Saturday night, claiming an 88-81 Peach Belt Conference road win over Georgia College & State in the Centennial Center.

ASU junior center Garret Siler booked his sixth double-double of the season, posting 22 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four assists. Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman carded 17 points and Ben Madgen managed 16 points. Senior guard Demetrius Howard, starting in the place of Daniel Dixon, notched 14 points and junior guard Steve Smith shifted from shooting guard to point guard and netted a season-high 13 points.

Bowman extended his streak of consecutive games in double figures to 38, while Madgen turned in his 17th double-figure scoring effort in 18 games this season.

The 10th-ranked Jaguars, who were idle Wednesday due to a bye in the PBC schedule, improved to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the PBC. ASU entered as the top-ranked team in the first South Atlantic Regional poll, while the Bobcats (12-6, 6-5 PBC) were seventh in the same poll.

The Jags led 36-32 at the half before exploding for 52 second-half points. They shot 66.7 percent from the field after intermission, connecting on 18-of-27 field goal attempts.

ASU led by as many as 16 in the first half after a Caleb Brown free throw at the 8:11 mark. The Bobcats recovered, outscoring the Jags 17-2 over the next 5:26 to pull within one before ASU answered with five straight points before the half.

GCSU took their first lead of the second half at the 13:46 mark, moving ahead 47-46 on a Graham Martin 3-pointer. The Bobcats led by four with 9:53 to go before ASU responded. The Jags scored on five of their next six possessions for a 12-2 run that Bowman capped with a layup at the 6:54 mark.

The Bobcats never got closer than four the rest of the way as Howard and Bowman connected on seven of eight free throws in the final 51 seconds.

The Jags return to action on Monday, Feb. 4, hosting Columbus State at 7:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
