Christmas In July For Metress, Jags

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State head men's basketball coach Dip Metress announced Friday the addition of Chad July to the Jaguar Men's Basketball program.

A 6-9, 260-pound center from Gainesville, Fla., July will enroll at ASU for the fall, 2012 semester and will have one year of eligibility remaining. He spent three previous three years as part of the Flagler College men's basketball program.

A product of Gainesville (Fla.) High School, July spent one season at Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine, prior to enrolling at Flagler. While at Bridgton, he helped lead the Wolverines to the Class A New England Prep School Athletic Conference title.

In three seasons at Flagler, July was part of 30 victories. He scored 760 points -- an average of 10.3 ppg. -- and shot 49.1 pct., from the field. As a junior in 2010-11, he averaged a career-best 11.0 ppg., and 8.5 rpg. He scored a career-high 26 points as a freshman vs. Armstrong Atlantic State and racked up a career-high 19 rebounds as a junior vs. Webber International.

"Chad chose Augusta State because he wants to win and wants to play in front of the best fans in the Peach Belt Conference," said Metress. "He'll give us a significant presence in the middle and he's battled tested in our conference. We expect him to have an immediate impact on our program."

Under Metress, ASU has established itself as one of the nation's elite programs. The Jaguars made five consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16 from 2007 through 2011, including three straight trips to the Elite Eight in 2008, 2009 and 2010. ASU has won 17 or more games in six consecutive seasons, including a pair of 30-win seasons in 2009 and 2011.

July joins Florida junior-college transfer Ryan Weems and North Carolina prep guard Keshun Sherrill as the first three additions to the Jaguar program in 2012. ASU is expected to return four starters and seven lettermen from last season's squad that posted a 17-11 record and advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals.
