Kolstad Notches Career-Best 29 Points in Win At Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Augusta University men's basketball team played its first game in 2018 on Wednesday night at Flagler College and the Jaguars pulled out an 89-80 victory in the Flagler Gymnasium.

 

Augusta (7-4, 4-1 PBC) led Flagler (4-5, 1-4 PBC) by as much as 13 points and had four players hit double-figure points. The Jaguars are now 4-1 in their last five games.

 

AU outscored Flagler 13-8 on fast-break points and outrebounded the Saints 40-37. The Jags had a 47.7 field-goal percentage (31-for-65), a 42.9 three-point percentage (9-for-21), and posted a free-throw percentage of 72 percent (18-for-25).

 

Flagler also shot 47.7 percent from field-goal range, while committing two more turnovers than AU and making eight less free throws.

 

Sophomore point guard Mikkel Kolstad had 14 first-half points and ended with a career-high 29. Kolstad is now second in the league in free-throw percentage, fifth in three-point percentage, and fourth in assists.

 

Leading the league in field-goal percentage, AU junior Deane Williams recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Tamyrik Fields sits second in the PBC in made field goals and he knocked down six to total 12 points with seven assists, four boards, and three blocks. Williams is also second in rebounds, fourth in field goals, and fifth in points in the Peach Belt, while Fields is fourth in points.

 

Junior Tyvez Monroe made three treys and totaled 12 points. He's ranked second in three pointers and third in minutes played.

 

The Jags enjoyed an 11-4 run in the first four and half minutes of the game and held the lead until the 6:15 mark in the first half when Flagler's Vaughn McCall hit a free throw to make it 34-33. A 12-6 run in the final five minutes of the game gave the Jags a halftime lead at 46-39.

 

Augusta held off Flagler in the second half, going 4-for-8 from the three-point line.

 

Augusta hosts Columbus State on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
