Augusta Downs Georgia College 74-69 In Overtime

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team started Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday afternoon and won a 74-69 overtime thriller against the Georgia College Bobcats in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

AU junior Rafael Monteiro had double-digit points at the break and ended the day with 19 total points to pace the team. Sophomore Troy Cracknell scored 16 off the Augusta bench and senior Deane Williams added 14 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.

 

The Jaguars started the game on a 7-0 advantage and enjoyed a 19-4 run at one point. Augusta led by as much as 17 in the first half, but the Bobcats brought the game back in the final minutes of the second half and trailed by six at halftime.

 

Georgia College stole the momentum and its first lead of the day with a dunk at the 16:33 mark in the second half to make it 39-38. Augusta took control right back with a Miguel Arnold three pointer as the Jags rebuilt a 10-point advantage. The battled ensued and the Bobcats re-tied the contest at 58-all with just over five minutes to go.

 

With one minute to play in regulation, GC held a 62-60 lead over Augusta. The Bobcats missed a jumper in the paint and Williams grabbed an Augusta rebound. A timeout was called with seven seconds to go and AU head coach Dip Metress drew up a play. Myers inbounded the ball to Williams who drove the lane and delivered a two-hand dunk to tie the game at 62-62 and force overtime.

 

Each team matched three field goals, before GC hit a lone free throw to lead 69-68 with 1:07 to go. Cracknell drew a foul on a three-point attempt and buried all three to lift Augusta on top 71-69. Myers held the ball for Augusta with seconds dwindling and drilled a jumper for a 73-69 lead as AU held on for a 74-69 victory.

 

Augusta hosts the fifth annual Education Day Game on Thursday, Dec. 6 with over 2,500 fifth graders from Richmond County for a special 11:00 a.m. tipoff in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags host a single non-conference game against the Emmanuel College Lions.
