Jaguars Earn Hootie Sweep

AWENDAW, S.C. -- Augusta State carded a final-round, seven-under 277 Tuesday and claimed a wire-to-wire, eight-shot victory in the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay Golf Club just outside of Charleston.

ASU’s Janne Kaske fired the lowest round of his collegiate career, a six-under 65, and captured his first collegiate individual title with a two-stroke win over South Carolina’s George Bryan IV.

The team victory, against a field that included nine teams ranked among the top 50 in the nation, was the first win for the Jaguar men’s golf program since claiming the 2005 NCAA Central Regional title in South Bend, Ind.

ASU’s team total of 17-under 835 was the lowest since the squad’s runnerup effort in the 2008 East Regional in Chattanooga, Tenn., where the Jags posted a total of 20-under 832.

Kaske’s three-round total of 199 (-14) matched the record for the lowest 54-hole total in school history, equaling Oliver Wilson’s standard that he established during the 2003 Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club.

A senior from Porvoo, Finland, Kaske carded a three-under 33 on the front nine, then added birdies at the par-11th and par-5 13th before closing his round in style with a birdie on the par-4 18th for an inward 32 and the lowest round of his career.

Sophomore Henrik Norlander joined Kaske in the top 10, carding a final round of three-under 68 for a three-round total of three-under 210 and a tie for eighth.

Junior Jake Amos posted a tie for 11th at one-under 212 following a final-round, one-over 72. Freshman Taylor Floyd tied for 29th after a 74 and sophomore Carter Newman tied for 41st after a closing 72.

Virginia finished runnerup to the Jaguars at nine-under 843, followed by South Carolina, Central Florida and North Carolina State.

LSU’s John Peterson took third place individually at eight-under 205, while Virginia’s Will Collins was fourth at six-under 207 and three-players tied for fifth, including N.C. State’s Matt Hill, the No. 8-ranked individual in the country.

ASU hosts the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational this weekend at Forest Hills Golf Club. The tourney gets underway Saturday morning with 36 holes of play, followed by Sunday’s third and final round.
