ASU's Norlander Shines In Palmer Cup

Men's Golf

DENVER, Colo. -- Augusta State All-American Henrik Norlander opened in strong fashion Thursday on day one of the 2009 Palmer Cup at Cherry Hills Country Club.

Norlander, the Danderyd, Sweden, native who recently wrapped up a stellar sophomore season for the Jaguars, teamed with fellow Swede Robin Wingardh (Tennessee) to dismantle the U.S. tandem of Erik Flores (UCLA) and Adam Mitchell (Georgia) 6-and-4 in the second of four morning four ball matches.

After the U.S. won the first hole for a 1-up lead, Team Europe won the second and third holes to move out to a 1-up lead and never trailed. Norlander and Wingardh combined for seven birdies and an eagle over the first 14 holes.

In the finale of eight afternoon singles matches, Norlander fell behind early to Oklahoma State’s Trent Leon before rallying. Trailing 2-down after just three holes, Norlander answered with three consecutive birdies on holes 5-7 and added birdies at the 13th and 15th to close out the match 3-and-2 over Leon. Norlander was 5-under-par through the first 16 holes without a bogey.

Team Europe owns a 7.5 to 4.5 lead over Team USA heading into Friday’s second and final day of competition. Friday’s schedule calls for four alternate shot matches in the morning, followed by eight singles matches in the afternoon. Norlander will again partner with Wingardh against Oklahoma State’s Morgan Hoffman and Georgia Tech’s Cameron Tringale beginning at 8:12 a.m.

The Palmer Cup is an annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe. The Europeans trail the all-time series, 6-5-1, but claimed last summer’s event 14-10 in Scotland. For more information, visit www.palmercup.org.
