Jags Ninth In Bunched Field

MACON, Ga. -- Augusta State posted an 18-over 298 in Saturday’s first round of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.

The 25th-ranked Jaguars are in ninth place after 18 holes in the three-day, 54-hole event, but just four shots out of fifth place. In fact, only nine strokes separate a bunched up pack of 12 teams in second through 13th place.

ASU senior Janne Kaske and freshman Taylor Floyd, a Macon native, paced the Jags with a pair of four-over 74’s. Junior Jake Amos and sophomore Olle Bengtsson are a shot back in a tie for 37th following a pair of five-over 75’s. Redshirt freshman Brendan Gillins signed for a 77 and is tied for 57th.

Georgia Tech, sparked by Cameron Tringale’s three-under 67, owns an eight-shot lead after opening with a two-over 282. Clemson, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Chattanooga round out the top five. Former British Amateur champion Drew Weaver of Virginia Tech is in second place individually after a two-under 68 and Tech’s John Tyler Griffin is alone in third after a one-under 69.

ASU will be paired with Penn State and Duke during Sunday’s second round, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Gillins will be first off for the Jags at 8:30, followed by Bengtsson at 8:40, Amos at 8:50, Floyd at 9:00 and Kaske at 9:10 a.m.
