GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Augusta State head men’s golf coach Josh Gregory fared well in the first day of the Southeastern Challenge Match at Kiva Dunes Golf Course.

Gregory earned two-and-a-half out of a possible three points in Saturday’s morning four-ball and afternoon foursome matches. In his morning match, he paired with Dalton’s David Noll to earn half a point against Alabama’s Woodie Eubanks and Robert Nelson.

Gregory and Noll held a brief 1-up lead early on in the match before Alabama won three straight holes on the back nine to move out to a 3-up lead with five to play. Gregory and Noll then won the 14th and 15th holes to trim their deficit to 1-up. After halving the 16th hole, Gregory and Noll birdied the 17th to pull even and when both teams made par on the 18th hole, their match was halved.

In the afternoon foursomes, Gregory and Noll again rallied on the back nine to earn wins over both Alabama and Florida. The Georgia duo defeated Alabama’s Talbert Griffin and Vic Kyatt 3&2 and then knocked off Florida’s Jeff Golden and Doug Snoap by the same tally.

At the end of the day, Georgia held a half-point edge over Alabama (10.5 to 10) and a four-point lead over Florida (10.5 to 6.5).

The Southeastern Challenge Match is a biennial competition among male amateur golfers representing the states of Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The teams consist of eight mid-amateur and four senior golfers selected by their respective golf association. The host site rotates among the three states.

The Southeast Challenge Match debuted at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, in 1989 as an event intended to promote goodwill and competition between the best amateur players, playing as a team, from Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

The series stands at five wins for Florida, five for Georgia and a single win for Alabama.
