ASU’s Echols Among All-PBC Selections

ASU’s Echols Among All-PBC Selections

FLORENCE, S.C. – Augusta State senior centerfielder Destiny Echols was named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference All-Conference squad Thursday night. The first and second-team All-PBC squads were officially announced during the PBC Softball Championship pre-tournament banquet held on the Francis Marion campus.

Echols, a second-team selection, joined ASU juniors Jessica Thornton, Kristen Jones and Kacee Camp on the all-conference squads. Thornton and Jones were first-team honorees, while Echols and Camp were second-team selections.

In just her first season in the program, Echols started all 46 games during the regular season in the Jags' outfield and served as the primary leadoff hitter. From Douglasville, Ga., Echols ranked fourth on the squad in hitting at .313. She led the team in at-bats (150) and her 10 doubles ranked second to only Jones. She was third on the team in runs scored (34), drew a team-best 22 walks and tallied 10 steals in 15 attempts.

Armstrong Atlantic State's April Jowers was named the PBC Player of the Year while USC Aiken's India Kornegay picked up Freshman of the Year accolades. North Georgia's Jessica Coan was tabbed the Pitcher of the Year while her head coach Mike Davenport earned Coach of the Year honors. In all, 34 student-athletes were named to the All-Conference squad, an expansion of two players due to ties at second-team outfielder and second-team at-large.

The fifth-seeded Jags (30-16) open PBC Tournament this morning at 11:00 a.m., vs. No. 4 seed Flagler (38-14). The double-elimination tournament culminates in the championship game on Sunday at 12:00 with an if necessary game to follow at 2:30. The winner of the PBC softball tournament receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
