AMERICUS, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team played at Georgia Southwestern on Saturday afternoon for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader and dropped a 6-5 battle in game one, before falling in game two 12-3 in five innings. There were seven combined home runs hit across the doubleheader.
Augusta (7-27, 2-4 PBC) out hit the GSW Canes 10-8 in game one and put up six hits to their' nine in game two.
Joshlyn Martin hit a first-inning home run for GSW to take a quick 2-0 lead in game one. The Jags countered in the fourth inning with Carolyn Edwards doubling to score Lydia Hausman, before Erin Rozier roped a two-run homer for a 3-2 swing. In the fifth, Marni Greenstein got in on the long ball fun and scored two on another AU home run.
Leading 5-3 in the fifth, the Jags went down 6-5 with Martin hitting her second GSW homer of the day and the fourth total of the game. GSW held on for the game-one win.
AU freshman Morgan Hunter (4-8) struck out five in six innings and allowed eight hits for six runs. Edwards and junior Lindsey Stokes each had two hits in game one and Greenstein and Rozier ended with a pair of RBI on the homers.
Shannon Gibson tossed five innings in the start for the Canes and Brittany Childs closed with two innings. Martin was 3-3 with five RBI for GSW.
The Jaguars scored one in the first and second inning of game two on Edwards and Stokes' singles, but the Canes hit a grand slam in the fourth to steal the advantage. Augusta's Auburn Balcorta belted a solo homer in the fourth, but more GSW homers willed them to the win.
Augusta heads across the state to Columbus, Ga., to clash with the Columbus State Cougars on Sunday, March 19 for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
