WINGATE, N.C. – The Augusta University softball team traveled to Wingate, N.C., to take on Wingate University in a non-conference doubleheader and fell 6-1 and 11-8 at the WU Softball Complex.
The Jaguars play at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C. on Sunday, Feb. 11 for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference twin bill.
Wingate led early and outhit Augusta 10-3 to take the first game.
Sophomore Morgan Hunter started on the mound for AU in game one and struck out five batters in 5.0 innings pitched. The Bulldogs produced nine hits for five runs off Hunter, before sophomore Courtney Browne pitched an inning of relief.
Junior-transfer Savannah Gabriel went 2-for-2 for the Jags with a run and an RBI – hitting a solo home run in the sixth inning. Senior first baseman Carolyn Edwards had the other hit for Augusta, while posting five put outs in the field.
The Jaguars jumped on the Bulldogs with four runs in the first inning of game two. Freshman Bella Fernandez carded an RBI with a single to score Gabriel and sophomore Lydia Hausman hit a three-run homer on a 1-2 count to lift Augusta on top 4-0.
Wingate stole the lead with a five-run second inning – highlighted by a three-run homer of their own. In the top of the third, junior Kelsea Hunter belted a triple down the right-field line, before senior Lindsey Stokes' double gave the Jags an 8-5 swing.
After posting two runs in the third, the Bulldogs hit their third long ball of the day and their second of game two to make it 10-8 in the bottom of the fourth and they held on for an 11-8 final.
Sophomore-transfer Jada Jackson made her first start on the mound as a Jaguar and tossed 2.2 innings, before Hunter took over and pitched 3.3 innings. Gabriel and Edwards each went 2-for-4, as Augusta totaled 11 hits to WU's 13.
