SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Augusta University softball team shut out the Converse College Valkyries 11-0 in game one of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, before winning 5-3 in the second game on the road.
The Jaguars (3-7) scored 16 unanswered runs in the doubleheader before Converse (0-12) scored their first run of the day. Augusta out hit Converse 25-10 and were perfect in the field with no errors.
Augusta returns to Spartanburg, S.C. Feb. 23-24 to the Mid-South Classic at Tyger River Park. Augusta faces Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial on Friday, Feb. 23 and meets Barton and Limestone on Saturday, Feb. 24.
Augusta showed up ready in game one and scored one in the first, five in the second, and another in the third. Senior Carolyn Edwards drove in junior Savannah Gabriel on an RBI single to the outfield in the first inning and Gabriel tripled to centerfield in the fifth inning to continue the offense. A Lindsey Stokes RBI-groundball plated Gabriel, before junior Kelsea Hunter singled and senior Ashley doubled to put AU big.
Tacking on four runs in the sixth inning, Augusta finished off the Valkyries early and scored one more to make it 11-0, when senior Kendyl Conner drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Edwards went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three times for the Jaguars. Boyd went 2-for-4 for the Jags with two RBI and a run, Gabriel scored twice and had a hit and an RBI, while Hunter scored twice in a 2-for-5 day.
Sophomore Courtney Browne (1-3) tossed five innings and struck out three batters. She held Converse scoreless with only three hits, before sophomore Jada Jackson closed it down in an inning of work to get a strikeout.
The AU defense made zero errors, while the offense had 13 hits to Converse's five.
The bats produced early for the Jags again in game two, as they scored four runs in the first inning and another in the second. AU outlasted Converse for a 5-3 win to take the day.
Morgan Hunter struck out six in a complete game performance for Augusta on the mound. The sophomore pitched seven innings for the Jaguars and allowed three runs on five hits.
Gabriel, Stokes, and Edwards all had two hits as the first three batters for Augusta. Sophomore Lydia Hausman went 2-for-4 with two RBI
