ASU Shuts Down Wingate, 80-70

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State picked up its fifth straight win Thursday afternoon with an 80-70 non-conference victory over Wingate in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

ASU limited Wingate to 36.1 percent shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers. In return, the Lady Bulldogs forced 25 turnovers by ASU and held the Lady Jags to just 2-of-15 from 3-point range.

Wingate took a 3-2 lead on an Edwards’ 3-pointer just 1:15 into the game and led for the next 4:28 until Paschal’s layup pulled ASU even at 15-all. The Lady Jags led by as many as seven over the next 10 minutes before a pair of Gillis free throws tied the game at 32-all with a little over four minutes remaining in the half.

ASU answered with five straight points before Sarah Rosser canned a trey with 9 seconds left to get the Lady Bulldogs within 37- 35 at the half.

Wingate pulled even at 37-all on Erica Crumlin’s layup just 35 seconds into the second half before the Lady Jags responded with a Jasmine Godwin 3-pointer that sparked a 9-0 run. Wingate got within 46-44 before ASU put together a second 9-0 spurt to go ahead 55-44 on a Nicole Mealing jumper with 11:26 remaining.

The Lady Bulldogs got as close as five on two different occasions only to have ASU answer with an 8-0 run. A Parker layup at the 1:05 mark gave the Lady Jags a 13-point advantage, their largest of the contest.

ASU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 5, when it hosts Clayton State in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader beginning with the women’s matchup at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
