COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team played their second Peach Belt Conference road game in four days on Monday night and lost a 98-62 contest against the Columbus State Cougars in the Lumpkin Center.
The Jaguars (4-3, 0-2 PBC) couldn't overcome Columbus State (7-0, 2-0 PBC) - who leads the PBC in points per game, rebounds, assists, and field goals and free throws made.
Augusta was led by offensively by senior Breonna O'Conner with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Tyren Ward scored 10 off the bench and grabbed five boards and senior Tavia Sykes added 13 points with a pair of threes.
CSU outrebounded the Jags 59-33 and led by as much as 43 points. The work on the glass led to the Cougars scoring 27 second chance points to Augusta's 14. The Jags continued to struggle from long range and shot 4-of-18 (22.2 percent), but CSU only shot 5-of-15 (33.3 percent).
For the game Columbus made 41-of-83 fields goals (49.4 percent) and Augusta went 24-for-64 (37.5 percent).
The game started with a 17-6 Columbus State run through the first five minutes of play. Alexis Carter had six quick points and went into the half with 11. The Cougars led by as much as 25 in the opening 20 minutes and had a halftime score of 49-30. Carter finished the game with 23 points to lead all scorers and Narshanda Malone provided 19 points.
Each team made a pair of three pointers in the first half, but Augusta shot 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) from the floor. Columbus jumped ahead thanks to hitting 21-of-44 shots from field-goal territory in the first half.
Carter's jumper started the Cougar offense in the third period and sparked a 7-0 run before O'Conner drained a basket to reach double-figure points. Augusta never recovered from Columbus' strong start and dropped their second league game.
Augusta returns to Christenberry Fieldhouse on Friday, Dec. 30 to host one more game in 2016 with Fayetteville State at 5:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
