AUGUSTA, Ga. – Head coach Sharon Quarles and the Jaguars announced the 2017 Augusta University volleyball schedule on Tuesday, June 11. Augusta's new slate is highlighted by 32 regular season matches, 11 Peach Belt matches, and three regular-season road tournaments.
Last season the squad posted 17 wins in the regular season and finished seventh in the league standings to advance to their third straight PBC Tournament and their 25th all time.
The team opens the season for the third consecutive year in Charlotte, N.C., at the Queens Invitational (Sept. 1-2) where they play four non-conference matches. Augusta takes on the Winston-Salem Rams and Wingate Bulldogs on Friday and the Vulcans of California University (Pennsylvania) and the Queens University Royals to conclude the invitational on Saturday.
"The schedule is providing us with ample opportunities not only within the conference, but within the region," Quarles said. "We have picked up some quality non-region opponents as well and this is going to test and re-test in the name of preparation as we work through the season towards the month of November when tournament time hits."
On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the Jags host Belmont Abbey at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse for the home opener. AU travels up the road to the USC Aiken Convocation Center in Aiekn, S.C., for a four-match tournament Sept. 8-9 hosted by rival USC Aiken. It is one of two tournaments that Augusta plays at the USCA Convocation Center, site of the 2016 NCAA Southeast Regional. Augusta faces Anderson, Valdosta State, Fayetteville State, and Barton on USCA's home floor.
The Jags open conference play with three consecutive Peach Belt matches at home, starting on Sept. 15 at 7:00 p.m. against Francis Marion. UNC Pembroke visits AU Sept. 16 for a 2:00 p.m. match and Georgia College comes for a midweek game Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
After the Regional Crossover tournament back in Aiken, S.C. (Oct. 13-14), Augusta hosts three home matches in Christenberry Fieldhouse, with Limestone (Oct. 23), Lander (Nov. 7) and ending the season against USC Aiken for 2017 Senior Day Nov. 11 at 2:00 p.m.
This year's roster consists of seven returners and 10 new players. The returning Jags include 2016 PBC Freshman of the Year Jessica Hedrick, second team All-Conference selection Blair Bolton and PBC All-Academic honoree Savanna Gonzales.
"We are excited mostly about our roster; not only the quality of players that we have assembled, but the increase in numbers to our roster," Quarles said. "We have gone from a 13-14 player roster to 18. It is providing us with more competition within positions and an overall balanced team across the board."
