NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team traveled to Newberry College on Tuesday night for a non-conference match and won 3-1 behind 14.5 team blocks.
Sporting their alternate pink jerseys to get ready for the Pink Out match in Augusta on Oct. 23, the Jaguars (12-10) won in four sets (25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 25-21) on the road to snap a two-match skid. Augusta held a block party at Newberry (8-11) on Tuesday, recording a season-high 14.5 blocks to the Wolves' seven.
The Jags made a statement in the first set with a 25-14 victory. AU found themselves in an up-and-down match when Newberry answered on their home floor with a 25-17 set-two win to even the match.
Set three was tied 8-all when back-to-back AU kills and three Newberry attack errors put Augusta on top, as they rolled to a 25-15 win. The opening three sets' scores were at least an eight-point deficit, but Augusta endured the closest set in the fourth and pulled out a 25-21 win.
Sophomore setter Payton Murchie had 14 assists and six digs for the Jaguars and freshman Holland Martin put up 18 digs and two assists. Freshman Chloe Allen blocked nine Newberry shots and had nine kills for the Jags, while Alyssa Frazier had eight blocks and Jessica Hedrick six blocks.
AU hit .231 in the match to Newberry's .118 attack percentage.
The Jags play back-to-back Peach Belt Conference matches next up, taking on UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C., Friday, Oct. 20 and Francis Marion in Florence, S.C., on Oct. 21. See full schedule here
