Augusta defeats Paine College in annual Richmond County Education Day Game

AUGUSTA, Ga – The Augusta University men's basketball team earned a commanding 91-60 victory over Paine College on Tuesday morning in front of an electric crowd of over 2,000 Richmond County fifth graders at Christenberry Fieldhouse. The event marked the ninth annual Richmond County Education Day Game, celebrating a true Richmond County rivalry as both institutions are located in Augusta, Georgia. 

Richmond County fifth graders, along with their teachers and staff, arrived at the arena starting at 9:45 a.m. and were greeted by the Augusta University Cheerleaders and Dance Team. The crowd was treated to an exciting 11:00 a.m. tipoff, featuring the new 'A' inflatable and upgraded digital scorers' tables, which added to the game-day experience. This year, Dorian Mealing from Copeland Elementary performed the national anthem to open the game.

During the game, students filled the arena with energy, participating in contests and activities such as trivia, layup competitions, and a free-throw challenge, with winners receiving prizes. Halftime was a highlight of the day, featuring a game of musical chairs, a performance by the Augusta University Dance Team. , and the retirement of Garret Siler's jersey, number 21. Siler, a graduate of Richmond County schools and former Augusta University star, went on to play in the NBA and is now a volunteer assistant coach for the Jaguars. His jersey retirement celebrated his impact on Augusta basketball and his continued contributions to the program as an assistant coach.

"It is hard to believe that anyone does education games better than us in the country," said Head Coach Dip Metress. "We appreciate Richmond County schools and Paine for participating in this incredible event."

Paine Head Coach Melvin 'Kerby' Marshall added, "The energy from the kids was awesome. The atmosphere was amazing. The guys really loved being on that stage. AU did a great job. Loved being a part of it."

On the court, the Jaguars delivered a strong performance, with John St. Germain III leading the way with 19 points and 7 assists. Demitri Gardner added 18 points and 5 rebounds, while Max Amadasun posted 16 points and 9 rebounds. Augusta shot 60.6% in the second half to secure the victory.

 

After the game, players visited with the Richmond County students, signing tickets and t-shirts, playing cards and posters, and taking pictures. 

 

Augusta will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 12, when they travel to take on Emmanuel University. Live stats and video will be available at augustajags.com.
