AUGUSTA, Ga. – Winning the single game on Friday afternoon 10-6, the Augusta State Jaguars returned to Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 2 to split the doubleheader – winning game one 5-4 and dropping the second 10-0.
Anderson went up 1-0 in game one, but ASU's Jeff Rice led off the third inning with a double and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt from freshman Justin Mee. Junior Kevin Dodson plated Rice with a double to even things up 1-1.
ASU junior transfer Nate Crown hit a double to start the fourth. A sac bunt and sac fly scored Crown and gave ASU a 2-1 lead.
Junior right-hander Clint Echols took the mound in game one for ASU. He went 6.0 innings and allowed four hits, one earned run, and four strikeouts. Senior righty Josh Barks reliefed in the seventh for ASU, giving up a solo shot to C-N's Bo Ausmus for a 2-2 tie. ASU freshman Garrett Haskins started the eight, but got into trouble early which lead to freshman right-hander David Bermudez's first mound appearance.
The Jags hit two batters in the eighth and walked one to give the lead back to C-N. An error in the ninth put the Eagles up 4-2 entering ASU's final at bat. Crown and freshman Hunter Boose led off the ninth with two singles. Crown socred on a wild pitvh and Boose was plated off a senior Seth Foster single to even thing at 4-4. A Rice single moved Foster to third and Mee's single's scored Foster for the comeback victory 5-4.
Bermudez (1-0) got the win for ASU, while Rice went 4-for-7 at the plate. Crown was 3-for-6 with two scored runs and Foster went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Eagle's sophomore Quinton Yocom pitched 7.0 in game two, allowing four hits and five strikeouts in the 10-0 Carson-Newman win. ASU gave up 14 hits and allowed nine earned runs in the loss.
ASU hosts West Georgia Saturday, Feb. 9 in a three-game weekend series at Lake Olmstead. First-pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, with a following doubleheader on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
