AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State notched 10 hits for 12 runs Tuesday afternoon at Jaguar Field, to take a single non-conference game over the Paine College Lions 12-6.
Jags junior Nate Crown went 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two scored runs while freshman Justin Mee was 4-for-5 with two runs. ASU freshman right-hander Trey McAvoy went 5.2 innings in the start, giving up six hits for six runs (three earned) and striking out three before he was relieved by senior slinger Tyler Ross (1-0). Ross came in at a six-all tie to get out of the inning and go on to earn the win, before sophomore righty Jaime Suggs closed it out in the eighth and ninth.
With the wind creating problems all day for outfielders, Paine's William VanWinkle gave the Lions a 3-0 lead with a homerun to centerfield off of McAvoy in the first inning. Crown tied the game for ASU in the bottom of the first with a three-run homer of his own to center that scored junior JD Sabo and freshman Lance Mangrum - who reached on a walk and hit by pitch.
ASU poured three more on for a 6-3 a lead in the third with some help from the Lions' infield. Two errors on Paine's third baseman put runners on first and second and a passed ball scored the first of the inning. Junior Kevin Dodson doubled to right-center field to plate junior Jeff Rice for an unearned run and freshman Logan South singled through the left side for his lone RBI of the day.
With two outs, Paine added two singles in the sixth and an error on ASU's infield and passed ball at home plate scored evened the game. Tied six-all, ASU added four in their half of the sixth and notched one in the seventh and eighth for a final 12-6 win.
Paine junior Chris Johnson went 3-for-5 with a run and RBI and VanWinkle was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.
