Braves and Jaguars Split Peach Belt Doubleheader

Pembroke, NC -- The University of North Carolina at Pembroke and Augusta State Jaguars basketball teams split a men's and women's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at the Jones Athletic Complex.  The UNCP women rallied from a seven point half-time deficit to defeat Augusta State 81-61. In the nightcap the Augusta State men hit 13 three-pointers in route to a 77-70 win over the Braves.

The Augusta State men's basketball team launched 35 three-point shots and made 13 of them in route to defeating the Braves 77-70. The Jaguars won despite receiving limited playing time out of their all-conference center Festus Hawkins. Hawkins was in foul trouble most of the game before being disqualified after playing just 15 minutes, scoring six points and recording three rebounds.

However four other players scored in double-figure points to replace Hawkins' missing offensive production. Gary Boodnikoff led the Jaguars with 16 points off the bench. Guard Jayme Johnson had 15 points, forward Marcus Gradney had 11 points and forward Russell Hinder had 10 points. Boodnikoff added seven rebounds and guard T.J. Ott had a game-high nine rebounds.

The Braves were led by point guard Jay Bruer's 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Center Mark Schmitz added 14 points. Guard Derrick Stinson had 13 points off the bench and guard Melvin Farrington had 12 points. Schmitz led the Braves with eight rebounds.

The Jaguars shot 58 percent from the floor in the second half after shooting just 29 percent in the first half. Augusta State also had 11 offensive rebounds in the game.

UNCP falls to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference with the loss. Augusta State improves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Both UNCP teams will return to action this Saturday night in the Jones center when they host The University of South Carolina at Aiken in another conference doubleheader. The women play at 5:30 followed by the men at 7:30.
