ASU Sweeps USC Spartanburg

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State used a pair of strong second halves to earn a sweep of USC Spartanburg in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Wednesday night at George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The victory -- the fifth straight for the men's squad -- improves ASU to 7-4 overall and keeps the Jags atop the PBC North Division at 3-0. The Lady Jaguars' win snapped a two-game losing streak and improved Head Coach Greg Wilson's squad to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Junior forward Patrick Curran led the way for ASU with a career-high 25 points, the top offensive output for an ASU player this season. Junior guard Ben Butler came off the bench to tally 15 points, including five three-pointers, and senior forward David Siebrands added 14 points.

USC Spartanburg (6-4, 0-2) had five players in double figures, led by Curtis Blair's 13 points. C.J. Paul posted 12 points and Kevin Harrington, Eric Murrell and Charlie O'Neal each chipped in 10 points.

ASU shot 50 percent in the second half to offset the Rifles' 58 percent shooting. The Jags had just five second-half turnovers after suffering 14 in the opening 20 minutes. ASU helped itself at the charity stripe as well, connecting on 29-of-36 attempts, compared to just 18-of-30 for USCS.

In the women's game, senior forward Sabrina Jones scored a game-high 21 points and blocked seven shots to lead ASU to a key 65-60 victory over the Lady Rifles. Melanie Massey tossed in 15 points off the bench, and junior point guard Ernesia Wideman added 11 points. Stephanie Feyes paced the USCS effort with 14 points and Kia Manuel chipped in 11.

ASU forced 27 Lady Rifle turnovers in the game and shot 50 percent in the second half after managing just 25.9 percent in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Jags also went to the free-throw line 46 times, connecting on 27.

USCS (6-4, 0-2) went up by as much as 10 in the first half and held the lead for a span of 28:32 over the first and second halves before ASU mounted its comeback. An 8-0 Lady Jag run, capped by a Julie Robbins' layup, gave ASU a 47-46 lead. USCS briefly tied the game at 49-all before the Lady Jags responded with six straight points -- five by Massey -- to pull away and seal the victory.

ASU continues its homestand Saturday when the Jaguars take on Georgia College and State University in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women's game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff, with the men's contest slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
