Jaguars Sweep Georgia College & State

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State junior point guard Ernesia Wideman poured in a career-high 30 points as the Lady Jags took a 85-76 victory over Georgia College & State University Saturday night in George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. The ASU men's squad completed the Peach Belt Conference sweep by downing the Bobcats 71-60 behind senior forward David Siebrands's game-high 23 points.

The victory is the sixth straight for the Jaguars and improves them to 8-4 overall and perfect in the PBC North Division at 4-0. The Lady Jaguars' win was their second straight and pushed their overall record to 8-3 and their PBC mark to 3-1.

With the loss, GC&SU's men fall to 6-5 and 3-2, while the Lady Bobcats drop to 8-4 and 3-2

For the second straight game, the Lady Jags heated up in the second half, connecting on 58 percent of their shots after halftime. ASU managed a season-low 14 turnovers, while its 85 points was by far the squad's highest point total of the season.

Paced by Wideman, who also added five assists and four steals, the Lady Jags had three other players in double figures. Sabrina Jones posted 16 points, while Shundra Johnson chipped in 12 off the bench and Melanie Massey added 10.

Dalana Watson led the Lady Bobcats with 18 points, while Adrienne Tucker had 15, Alicia Ransom 14 and Breane Haggard 12.

In the men's game, the Jags battled back from an early deficit to win their sixth straight outing. The Bobcats jumped ahead 13-7 before ASU responded with an 13-4 run to take a 20-17 lead on Darrick Broddie's layup. The Jags pulled ahead by as much as eight on a Siebrands' jumper at the 6:41 mark of the first half. An 8-0 spurt to start the second half pushed their advantage to double digits, only to have GC&SU answer, outscoring the hosts 14-3 over a 4:27 stretch.

GC&SU's Kedrick Larry connected on a three-pointer to knot the game at 45-all with 12:38 left. Marcus Johnson put ASU back ahead on a pair of free throws and the Jags never trailed again. The Bobcats got within two on a Rodney Keener layup before the Jags tallied five straight points to widen their lead to 56-49 with 5:55 remaining. After Keener's free throw pulled GC&SU to within six with 2:09 left, Chris Harriman found Jermale Wilkerson for a back-door layup to ignite a 7-0 ASU spurt over the last 1:27 of the game.

ASU hits the road for the second time in Peach Belt Conference play when the Jaguars travel to Columbus Monday to take on high-powered Columbus State in a key league showdown. The women's game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff, with the men's contest slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
