ASU Splits With Kennesaw State

 

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Kennesaw State held off a pair of late Augusta State charges to take a hard-fought 65-63 and earn a split in the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Wednesday night in George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Lady Jaguars knocked off KSU in the opener 59-54.

The loss drops the Jags to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in the PBC. The Lady Jaguars improved to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in league play. KSU upped its record to 13-3 and 5-1, while the Lady Owls fell to 9-5 and 3-3.

Junior forward Marty Dunham was the lone Jaguar to reach double figures, tallying a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Chris Harriman dished out a season-high 10 assists and collected five steals. For KSU, Terrence Hill led the way with 17 points, while Tommy Thompson and Brandon Moore each added 13 and Justin Thompson chipped in 10. 

Kennesaw led by as much as 16 in the first half and took a 12-point lead into halftime. The Jags came out with a different lineup in the second half and outscored the Owls 13-3 in the first 4:30 to get within two at 39-37. KSU answered right back with a run of its own, scoring 11 straight points to lead 50-37 at the 12:06 mark. The Owls maintained a double-digit lead until the Jags put together an 11-2 spurt to cut their deficit to 56-53 with 5:26 remaining.

KSU answered with five straight points to push its lead back to eight before six straight ASU points got the hosts to within 61-59 with :31 left. But Hill hit four free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the victory.

Augusta State senior forward Sabrina Jones scored 19 points -- 18 in the first half -- to pace the Lady Jaguars. Junior guard Melanie Massey tossed in 15 and junior point guard Ernesia Wideman posted 10 points, eight assists and four rebounds. Junior forward Shundra Johnson blocked four shots for the Lady Jags.

KSU's Denisha Ferguson poured in 29 points to lead all scorers and booked nine rebounds as well. She was the only Lady Owl to reach double figures. Augusta State limited Kennesaw to just 25.9 percent shooting in the second half and held KSU without a three-pointer. The Lady Owls were 0-of-8 from three-point range, while ASU connected on 4-of-10 attempts from beyond the arch.

Augusta State returns to action Saturday, Jan. 18 when ASU hosts UNC Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. Game time is 2:00 p.m. for the women's game, with the men's game to follow at 4:00 p.m.
