ASU Takes Homecoming Sweep Of Lander

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta State Lady Jaguars clinched the Peach Belt Conference's North Division title for the first time since 1994-95 when they downed Lander 80-67 Saturday in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The victory, combined with USC Aiken's 56-52 loss at Georgia College & State, puts ASU five games ahead of USCA with only four games remaining in the regular season.

The Jaguars made it a clean sweep on Homecoming when they held off Lander 82-73 in the men's contest.

The victory pushes the Lady Jags to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in conference play. The ASU men improve to 15-8 overall and 11-4 as well in the league. Lander's women's squad falls to 11-12 and 5-10, while the men drop to 5-18 and 2-13.

The women's contest was one-sided, as ASU reeled off an 18-2 run over a span of 5:32 to take a 41-22 lead into halftime. The Lady Jags canned six three-pointers in the first half and outrebounded Lander 33-10 in the opening 20 minutes. They led by as much as 29 early in the second half following a Melanie Massey jumper at the 13:27 mark. Lander ran off nine straight points to cut its deficit to 15 before ASU answered, pushing its lead back to 21 with 2:21 left. The visitors then closed out the game with eight straight points.

Lander's Khalilah Henderson tallied a game-high 22 points, while Quiannta Mauney posted 14 and LaShonda Denmon and Jennifer Beamon added 13 each.

Sabrina Jones paced ASU with 18 points and Arijana Sijercic booked a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ernesia Wideman and Massey each chipped in 12 points for the Lady Jags, who overcame 28 turnovers by outrebounding Lander 62-37.

In the men's contest, Adrian Penland's game-high 26 points weren't enough to lift the Senators past Augusta State. ASU got 20 points from David Siebrands and made 26-of-34 free throws en route to an 82-73 win. The two teams combined for 64 attempts from the charity stripe and 55 fouls.

Neither team led by more than four points in a fast-paced first half that featured 13 lead changes and four ties. Chris Harriman's layup with 11 seconds left gave ASU a 36-35 halftime lead. The pace slowed considerably in the second half, as the two teams were whistled for 39 fouls and combined for 52 free-throw attempts.

The Jags opened the second half on an 8-2 run, grabbing a seven-point lead on Marty Dunham's jumper. But the Senators responded with a 9-1 run, taking a 46-45 lead on a Ron Hampton layup at the 12:38 mark. ASU responded with a 12-2 spurt to take a 57-48 lead, and then stretched its advantage to 13 on a Ben Butler jumper with 5:18 remaining. The game became a free-throw contest the rest of the way, as the two teams combined for 32 free throw attempts.

Harriman chipped in 12 points and Marty Dunham added 10 for ASU, which has won four straight and six of its last eight and maintains a two-game lead over USC Spartanburg. Lander's Ron Hampton and Ade Mason contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively, in the losing cause.

Augusta State travels to suburban Atlanta to take on Kennesaw State in a PBC doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Lander hosts Francis Marion on Wednesday in Greenwood, S.C.
