Gregory A Near Miss In U.S. Open Bid

CORDOVA, Tenn. -- Augusta State men’s golf coach Josh Gregory narrowly missed earning a berth Monday in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Gregory carded a 36-hole total of six-under 137 at Colonial Country Club just outside of Memphis, Tenn., and at Chickasaw Country Club. He ended up in a nine-way playoff for the final two qualifying spots and was the only non-professional golfer among the group. A total of 14 spots were available in the original 105-man field, which consisted mostly of PGA Tour pros in town for the Stanford St. Jude Classic later this week at the TPC Southwind in Memphis.

“I thought I had a good chance of getting in when I made birdie on the final hole,” Gregory said. “Most years, six-under-par is plenty good enough. But at least I can say I was the low amateur. This was a great experience and it gives me a lot of confidence going forward.”

Also failing to advance were former ASU golfers Richard Johnson of Wales (69-70=139/-4) and Roger Rowland (69-72=141/-2).

The U.S. Open will be played June 12-15 at Torrey Pines Golf Course’s North Course in La Jolla, Calif., just outside of San Diego.
