Jags junior wins points-based system based on three summer tournaments
AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta men's golf rising junior Jake Marriott won the 2015 Aflac Cup on July 25 at The Oglethorpe Invitational, hosted by the Wilmington Island Club in Savannah, Ga.
The Aflac Cup was awarded to the player with the combined best tournament results of three major amateur tournaments: The Southeastern Amateur, hosted by the Country Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ga., The Rice Planters Amateur, hosted by the Snee Farm Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and The Oglethorpe Invitational.
Jake Marriott finished in the top 15 in all three events and posted two top-10 showings. On July 25, Marriott finished tied for sixth at the Oglethorpe. After finishing tied for 14th at the Southeastern on June 20, Marriott notched ninth on June 27 at the Rice Planters.
"I heard about (the AFLAC Cup), and that's why I decided to play (in the Oglethorpe)," Marriott said, who was the AFLAC Cup points leader entering this week's event. "Unfortunately, I wasn't able to win any of those tournaments, but I was able to be competitive in all three, and this is a nice accomplishment for my summer."
Aflac, the leading provider of voluntary insurance at the work site in the United States, announced on June 18, 2015 there sponsorship of a new Aflac Cup trophy recognizing the top amateur golfer in three prestigious events. Mirrored after the PGA TOUR's season-long championship format, the Aflac Cup was awarded based on a point system. Marriott received the most points based on standings at the end of the designated tournaments.
