Augusta Takes 15 Shot Lead To Open MEAC Championship

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Augusta University men's golf team began its quest to win the third consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men's Golf Championship on Wednesday. Augusta cruised to a 15-shot lead in the opening round at Crosswinds Golf Club and sits in first place out of seven teams.


Ranked No. 50 in the nation, Augusta sent junior Broc Everett, seniors Emmanuel Kountakis, Jake Marriott, Viktor Edin, and freshman Gustav Andersson as the starting five.


All five of Augusta's players shot under par in the first round, with two-time MEAC Golfer of the Month Broc Everett holding the individual lead after shooting a 5-under 67. In the bogey-free round, Everett had three birdies and an eagle on the par-5 ninth.


Kountakis currently sits in second with a 3-under 69, firing six birdies and three bogeys, while Andersson is tied for third after firing a 2-under 70 – benefitting from a 3-under back nine.


Marriott and Edin are tied for fifth at 1-under (71), along with Hampton's Jordan Samuels.


Augusta, the two-time defending MEAC champion, holds a 15-shot lead over Bethune-Cookman – which opened the tournament on Wednesday with a 4-over 292. North Carolina Central sits in third after one day with a 10-over 298, while host Savannah State is fourth with a 12-over 300.


Hampton sits in fifth after a 14-over 302 on the first day, while Florida A&M (25-over 313) and Maryland Eastern Shore (43-over 331) are sixth and seventh.


Thursday's second round will begin with the first tee time at 8:00 a.m. Live scoring will again be available through GolfStat.


The winner of the conference tourney receives an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Division I men's golf selection show will air on Thursday, May 4 at 12:00 p.m. on Golf Channel.
