AMERICUS, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team started Peach Belt Conference play on Sunday afternoon and lost 7-5 and 10-2 at Georgia Southwestern.
Augusta is now 3-17 overall and 0-2 in Peach Belt, with the GSW Canes went to 15-11 overall and 4-2 in the league.
Augusta hosts Flagler on Saturday, March 23 for a 12:00 p.m. conference double feature at Jaguar Field in Augusta, Ga.
Augusta responded after giving up a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and scored four runs in the second inning. Freshman Oliva Biles singled to get an RBI and sophomore Bella Fernandez and senior Savannah Gabriel hit back-to-back doubles to put the Jags up.
The Canes carded a run in the next two innings to tie the game at 4-all and eventually took a 7-4 lead. A late home run from senior Kelsea Hunter sparked Augusta, but GSW held on for a 7-5 final. The Jaguars outhit the Canes 10-9, but committed two errors.
The Jaguars found life early when freshman Madelyn Libby scored on a passed ball in the first inning. GSW came back with three runs in the first and five in the second and eventually won a 10-2 game.
AU put up four hits, but GSW carded 10 in the victory. Gabriel, Libby, Castillo and freshman Lauren Prescott all had a hit for Augusta.
