AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's basketball team hosted 2017 Homecoming and Senior Day on Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars fell to PBC East-Division leading Lander 87-74.
Augusta moved to 13-12 overall and 8-10 in the Peach Belt, while Lander went to 20-6 and 13-4 in the league with the win.
The Jags were led by junior Abrea Harris and senior Breonna O'Conner. Each scored 22 points for Augusta and junior Cynara Pitt added 11 points. Augusta shot 42 percent from the floor (29-of-69) and went 6-for-13 from the three-point line (46.2 percent).
Lander's Breshay Johnson leads the PBC in field-goal percentage and free throws and she scored 23. Ty'Hesha Reynolds has the most three pointers in the league and she finished with 14, while Mylea McKenith added 23 points for LU.
Lander outrebounded Augusta 43-33, but the Jaguar bench outscored the Bearcats 28-11.
Lander led by six to open the game, but Harris had a quick 11 points highlighted by three treys to give Augusta a 17-15 lead after the first period. The Bearcats outscored the Jags 23-13 in the second half and led 38-30 at the midway pause.
Harris had 19 off the bench for Augusta in the first half to anchor the early offense. In the second half, Lander led until three minutes in the third period when O'Conner made a fast-break layup for a 49-47 score.
Lander controlled the third and fourth period score, but AU had the game to under 10 points with two minutes to go. Lander never slipped and held on for the league win.
The Jaguars head across the Savannah River to take on rival USC Aiken on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m. The men tip at 7:30 p.m.
