Augusta Falls To Montevallo in Five Set Frenzy

AUGUSTA, Ga. – In front of a roaring midweek crowd and in a match that was tied 28 times, the Augusta University women's volleyball team had their five-game win streak snapped by the Montevallo Falcons in a 3-2 Peach Belt Conference loss on Tuesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Jaguars (10-4, 5-2 PBC) hosted the volleyball match with Montevallo (9-8, 3-5 PBC) as part of a campus-wide effort to raise awareness and provide supplies for Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) in October. The Augusta University College of Education and Department of Advanced Studies & Innovation spearheaded the initiative with Augusta Athletics. The team held a donation drive during the event and fans donated numerous items!

Senior Jordan Bickett was everywhere in the match as she carded a team-high 17 kills with 11 digs, four aces, and three assists. Sophomore Savanna Gonzales had 14 kills and five digs and freshman Jessica Hedrick and sophomore Blair Bolton turned in nine kills.

Freshman Sammie Baker assisted 29 shots and had 27 digs and Payton Murchie posted 23 digs.

The Falcons earned the opening kill of the match and controlled the first few points. The Jaguars responded with a set-tying block from freshman Jessica Hedrick and senior Jordan Bickett for an 8-8 set-one score.

UM was on set point at 24-19 and held off the Jags for a 25-22 win to take the first official lead in the match. Augusta bounced back and won set two 25-16 on an ace from Bickett.

Sophomore Savanna Gonzales gave the Jags the first point of set three and the team rolled to a 4-0 start. Montevallo matched them point for point and eventually led 22-17. The score was 23-24 after the Jags made a run, but the Falcons fought off the surge to take a 25-23 victory.

Set four was the closest battle of the night. Tied 25-all, the set went to the Jags at 29-27 to force a fifth. Montevallo's Nicolette Fiessinger stayed on serve to start set five and put the Falcons up 6-0. They outlasted the Jags 15-4 to take the match.

The Jaguars hit the road for PBC matches at Flagler on Friday, Oct. 7 and at Armstrong State Saturday, Oct. 8.
