CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Augusta University volleyball team started play in its second tournament of the season on Friday afternoon at the Queens Fall Classic on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte. The Jaguars won a pair of 3-0 non-conference matches over Anderson and Winston Salem State to remain undefeated on the young season.
Augusta vs. Anderson
The Jaguars faced the Anderson Trojans to start the event and improved to 4-0 on the season with their fourth consecutive flawless victory. Augusta swept Anderson 3-0 to continue their streak without a set loss this season. The first set saw the Jags win by the largest margin of the match with a 25-16 victory, before winning 25-18 and 25-23.
AU senior Savanna Gonzales put up 10 kills and 10 digs, while senior McKenzey Beck provided 13 assists, nine digs, and nine kills. Junior Cheryke Brian-Garmos added 18 assists and five digs and sophomore Holland Martin gave the team 21 digs and three assists.
The Jags hit .271 as a team and held the Trojans to a .079 hitting percentage.
Augusta vs. Winston-Salem
Improving to 5-0 on the year, Augusta won its fifth match with a 3-0 win over Winston Salem State. AU didn't let Winston Salem score above 15 points in the match. Gonzales hit .524 and posted a team-best 12 kills for the Jags. Martin had 15 digs, Brian-Garmos 15 assists, and senior Blair Bolton six kills with a pair of digs and blocks.
Augusta returns to the Queens Fall Classic for day two on Saturday, Sept. 1 to take on Wingate (10:00 a.m.) and Barton (4:45 p.m.)
