AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team played its fifth Peach Belt Conference match of the season on Friday night and dropped a 3-1 match to the Lander Bearcats in Christenberry
Augusta (14-4, 3-2PBC) entered the match on a three game win streak, but
Lander (16-3, 3-1 PBC) was too much. AU honored head coach Sharon Quarles in a pre-match ceremony for surpassing 400 career wins as an NCAA collegiate coach.
Senior setter McKenzey Beck led the Jaguars with 14 kills, 17 asssits, and 15 digs – her fourth triple-double of the year and her second in two matches. Senior Savanna Gonzales had 12 kills with six digs and junior Jessica Hedrick and sophomore Chloe Allen each had seven kills. Junior Cheryke Brian-Garmos put up 18 assists and 14 digs and Holland Martin had 14 digs.
Set one had nine tie scores in the early points, but LU took off to lead 21-17. Augusta went on a 5-0 run to take the lead and held on for a 27-25 win in an extended first set. The Bearcats bounced back by booking a 25-15 set-one win. With the match tied, the third set saw AU take a 5-0 lead with Brian-Garmos on serve, but Lander took the next three sets to win 3-1.
USC Aiken comes to town Saturday, Oct. 6 for a 2:00 p.m. first serve. The Wounded Warrior Project will be in attendance on Oct. 6 to cheer on the Jags in their next Peach Belt Conference match of the season.
