Bulldogs Nip Jaguars At Brickyard

MACON, Ga. -- Augusta State caught fire Sunday, posting its lowest round of the season to nearly overtake Georgia in the final round of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at The Brickyard at Riverside.

Sparked by senior Mitch Krywulycz's career-low, 6-under 66, the Jaguars tallied the low round of the day and of the tournament with a 13-under 275. After they played the par-5 18th in 2-under, the Jags pulled within a single stroke of Georgia. The Bulldogs, who owned a 12-shot lead entering the final round and were playing directly behind ASU on the course, sealed the team victory when Russell Henley tapped in for par on No. 18

Carter Newman and Henrik Norlander each booked 3-under 69's, Patrick Reed tallied a 1-under 71 and Taylor Floyd posted an even-par 72. Newman (68-73-69) finished in solo second place at 6-under 210, while Krywulycz (75-74-66) tied for 13th at 1-under 215 and Floyd tied for 18th at 1-over 217 (72-73-72). Norlander (76-74-69) was 25th at 3-over 219 and Reed (74-77-71) was 35th at 6-over 222.

With a 4-under 68, Henley finished at 10-under 206 and posted a four-shot victory over Newman. Florida State's Brooks Koepka and UT-Arlington's Zack Fischer tied for third at 5-under 216. Georgia Tech's Kyle Scott, Billy Brozovich of Ole Miss and Virginia Tech's Marshall Bailey tied for fifth at 4-under 212.

The Jags close out their Fall, 2010 schedule Nov. 8-10 in the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif.

NOTES … The Jags recorded their 13th consecutive top-five finish dating back to last fall's Brickyard Collegiate … ASU, playing the fourth-toughest schedule in the nation according to Golfweek, entered the tourney ranked No. 3 by Golfstat and in the Golf World/Nike Coaches poll and No. 5 by Golfweek … … The Jags combined for 24 birdies and an eagle in Sunday's final round … Mitch Krywulycz stood at even par on the day through 11 holes before chipping in for eagle at the par-5 12th … He followed with birdies on the 13th and 14th, and closed out his round with birdies on the 17th and 18th, getting up and down from the front left greenside bunker on the final hole … Taylor Floyd's even-par 72 marked his low round this fall … Krywulycz's previous low round as a collegian was a 5-under 67 in the final round of the 2010 Administaff ASU Invitational … The Jags played the par 5's in a combined 36-under par, including 24-under from Floyd, Carter Newman and Henrik Norlander … Newman ranked second in the field with 14 birdies … Newman and Krywulycz ranked second in par-4 scoring at 2-under par.
