STILLWATER, Okla.
-- Augusta State opened play Sunday in the PING/Golfweek
Preview with a 16-over 304 at demanding Karsten Creek Golf Club,
where only two players shot under par and 20 of the 74-player field
failed to break 80.
Paced by Henrik
Norlander, the second-ranked Jaguars are in eighth place in a
field that includes 14 teams ranked in the top 30 in Golfweek's
preseason national rankings.
Norlander, a senior from Danderyd, Sweden, carded three straight
birdies on the back nine en route to a 1-under 71. He is alone in
second place, just two shots back of Oklahoma State freshman Talor
Gooch.
"I played really well. I was able to keep the ball in play all day
and didn¹t make any stupid mistakes and putted pretty well
which obviously helps," Norlander said. "I made a lot of six and
seven-foot puts that I needed to make to have this kind of
day."
Seniors Mitch Krywulycz
and Carter
Newman posted a pair of 5-over 77's and are tied for 34th.
Junior Patrick
Reed managed a 79 and is 47th and junior Taylor Floyd is
56th after signing for an 81.
Top-ranked Oklahoma State, playing on its home course, combined
for an even-par 288 and opened up a nine-shot advantage over Texas
A&M, the 2009 National Champions. Georgia Tech is third, while
Georgia, Oregon and UCLA are tied for fourth, just four shots in
front of the Jags.
ASU will be paired with Texas Tech and Arizona State for Monday's
second round. Floyd is first off for the Jags at 9:00 a.m., EDT,
followed by Reed at 9:10, Newman at 9:20, Krywulycz at 9:30 and
Norlander at 9:40.
The last time the Preview was contested at Karsten Creek, ASU won
the team title in 2002 and former Jaguar All-American Emmett Turner
claimed medalist honors. The Jags tallied a total of 16-over 880
(300-291-289), Turner finished at 3-under 213 (74-69-70) and
teammate Scott Jamieson was second at even-par 216 (71-75-70).

Augusta State senior Henrik Norlander quotes
On his round:
"I played really well. I was able to keep the ball in play all day
and didn¹t make any stupid mistakes and putted pretty well
which obviously helps. I made a lot of six and seven-foot puts that
I needed to make to have this kind of day."
On the playing conditions:
"It was 90 degrees and no wind yesterday. I heard the course was
tough enough and then I came out here and it was completely
different today. I like playing in the wind but it¹s obviously
tough."
On the remainder of the week:
"I¹m just going to try to keep doing what I¹m doing --
hit the fairways and keep putting well and keep in mind that par is
a good score on this course."
