STILLWATER, Okla.
-- Augusta State battled back Monday afternoon in the
PING/Golfweek Preview with an even-par 288 at Karsten Creek Golf
Club and moved into sixth place heading into Tuesday's final
round.
Fueled by Patrick Reed's
5-under 67, the second-ranked Jaguars sliced their deficit in half
and pulled within eight shots of the lead held by Oklahoma State,
the tourney host.
A junior from Martinez, Ga., Reed carded nine birdies -- seven on
the front nine -- against two bogeys. In fact, a double bogey on
the par-5 14th likely cost Reed a chance at besting the competitive
course record of 66.
The Jaguars got an even-par 72 from senior Mitch Krywulycz,
while junior Taylor Floyd
rebounded with a 1-over 73 and senior Carter Newman
signed for a 4-over 76. Senior Henrik
Norlander, who opened with a 1-under 71 Sunday, had the day's
non-counting score (78).
With the low round of the day, Reed moved from 47th into a tie for
sixth at 2-over 146, while Krywulycz and Norlander are tied for
20th at 5-over 149. Newman and Floyd are 40th and 45th,
respectively.
Georgia Tech and Georgia are tied for second, just one shot back
of the Cowboys, with UCLA and Texas A&M rounding out the top
five. The Bruins are three shots off the lead and the Aggies are
five back and one stroke clear of the Jags.
Individually, Hudson Swafford of Georgia fired a 4-under 68 to
grab a two-shot lead over a quartet of players. Reed is tied for
sixth with Oregon's Daniel Miernicki and OSU's Peter Uihlein, three
strokes off the pace.
ASU will be paired with UCLA and Texas A&M for Tuesday's final
round. Floyd will once again lead off for the Jags at 9:20 a.m.,
EDT, followed by Newman at 9:30, Krywulycz at 9:40, Norlander at
9:50 and Reed at 10:00 a.m.
The last time the Preview was contested at Karsten Creek, ASU won
the team title in 2002 and former Jaguar All-American Emmett Turner
claimed medalist honors. The Jags tallied a total of 16-over 880
(300-291-289), Turner finished at 3-under 213 (74-69-70) and fellow
All-American Scott Jamieson was second at even-par 216
(71-75-70).
