ASU Battles Back, Finishes Fourth

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Augusta State tallied a 7-over 295 Tuesday afternoon in the third and final round of the PING/Golfweek Preview, improving two spots to register a fourth-place finish at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

Paced by the All-American duo of senior Henrik Norlander and junior Patrick Reed, the Jaguars recorded their 12th consecutive top-five finish dating back to last fall's Brickyard Intercollegiate in Macon, Ga.

In eighth place after Sunday's first round, ASU inched up into sixth following a second-round, even-par 288 on Monday. In the final round, Norlander and Reed carded a pair of 1-under 71's, while seniors Mitch Krywulycz and Carter Newman managed a 75 and 78, respectively. Junior Taylor Floyd had the day's non-counting score with a 79.

Reed tied for fourth, his second straight top-five effort, while Norlander was sixth. Krywulycz just missed his second consecutive top-20 finish, tying for 21st. Newman tied for 43rd and Floyd was 51st.

Tourney host Oklahoma State combined for a 6-over 294 and posted a four-shot victory over UCLA. Georgia was third, four shots clear of ASU and Texas A&M.

UCLA's Pontus Widegren carded a 3-under 69 and claimed medalist honors with a 2-under 214. OSU's Peter Uihlein and Georgia's Hudson Swafford tied for second, two shots off the pace. Widegren's effort was the only sub-70 round of the day and he was the only player among the 75 starters to finish under par. No one in the field was able to put together three sub-par rounds.

For the tournament, Karsten Creek's 7,407-yard, par-72 layout played to a scoring average of 76.44, including a first-round average of 77.78. For the final two rounds, it played to 75.12 and 76.42, respectively.

The last time the Preview was contested at Karsten Creek, ASU won the team title in 2002 and former Jaguar All-American Emmett Turner claimed medalist honors. The Jags tallied a total of 16-over 880 (300-291-289), Turner finished at 3-under 213 (74-69-70) and fellow All-American Scott Jamieson was second at even-par 216 (71-75-70).

The Jags are back in action on Friday, Oct. 8 at the Brickyard Intercollegiate in Macon, Ga., at The Brickyard at Riverside.
