NEWPORT COAST, Calif. -- Augusta State staged a back-nine rally Sunday to register an even-par 350 in the Battle At The Beach's opening round at Pelican Hill Golf Club's Ocean North Course.
The second-year tournament is a three-day, 54-hole event and features a play-six, count-five format.
Sparked by sub-par efforts from senior Mitch Krywulycz and freshman Alex Wennstam, the No. 14 Jaguars are just two strokes out of first place.
Krywulycz carded seven birdies, including three of his last four holes, for a 3-under 67. Wennstam, making is Jaguar debut, battled back from a 4-over-start through his first seven holes with five birdies in his final 10 holes for a 1-under 69.
Seniors Henrik Norlander and Olle Bengtsson posted a pair of 1-over 71's and junior Patrick Reed signed for a 2-over 72. Reed, coming off a sixth-place finish last weekend in the Jones Cup, stood at 8-over after six holes, then rattled off six birdies in his last 11 holes for a 2-over 72 that included a back-nine 30. Senior Carter Newman had the day's non-counting score, a 3-over 73.
ASU's six-man lineup combined for 32 birdies on the day, including seven each from Norlander and Krywulycz.
No. 25 San Diego recorded a 2-under 348 to grab the first-round. Arizona State and Washington are tied for third, one stroke back of ASU and Washington and Arkansas are tied for fifth, three shots behind the Jags and five off the lead.
San Diego's Kenneth McCready fired a 5-under 65 for a 1-stroke lead over Washington's Ty Chambers and a two-shot advantage over ASU's Krywulycz and UCLA's Connor Driscoll. Wennstam is tied for 11th, Norlander and Bengtsson share 27th, Reed is 37th and Newman is 44th.
